Pueblo Central Hall Of Honor 2014 Inductee

Robert C. Gardner, MD (1958)

Robert C. Gardner M.D. graduated from Central in 1958. He attended Carlile Elementary and Keating Junior High. Bob was a well-rounded student who participated in academics, sports, and the high school band. He was selected to attend Boys State in his junior year. He graduated 4th in the class of 425 students.

Bob entered the University of Colorado in 1958 where he received his BA degree with majors in physics, chemistry and math. It was here that he decided to become a physician and entered the pre-med program. He was elected to Alpha Epsilon Delta, a pre-medicine honorary society. Bob entered medical school at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, graduating with his MD in 1966.

Dr. Gardner served his internship at the Baylor Medical College from 1966-1967. He then entered the Air Force with the rank of Captain and practiced medicine at Vance Air Force base in Oklahoma for two years. After leaving the service in 1969, Bob went to the University of Tennessee Medical College where he served as an ophthalmology resident until 1973. Looking forward to what would become his specialty, Bob completed a six-month retina fellowship at St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Bob returned to Colorado in 1973 and set up practice in Colorado Springs. He received his medical board certification in 1974. With a fellow ophthalmologist, Dr. Gardner founded Eye Associates of Colorado Springs. This very successful venture quickly grew to four to six ophthalmologists and two optometrists. Over the years, they joined Colorado Eye Associates and eventually moved into the Pinnacle Eye Center that has a total of fourteen ophthalmologists. The Center also includes an optical dispensary and an outpatient surgical facility.

Dr. Gardner developed into a comprehensive ophthalmologist specializing in diseases of the retina. He successfully performed intraocular surgery for over thirty years. In recent years, he has begun to work part time and has shifted focus to medical diseases of the eye, including diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. He is on the Healthgrades Honor Roll, a physician ranking service that recognizes his outstanding medical career.

Bob is a member of the El Paso County Medical Society, Colorado Medical Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the Colorado Springs Ophthalmology Society. He has emeritus staff assignments to Penrose Hospital and Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Gardner is also using his expertise in medicine to help the less fortunate people in the world. In summer 2014, he will travel with two dentists on a mission to Antananaviro, Madagascar (off the eastern coast of Africa), where he will examine and treat patients with vision problems.
